Sew Retro: 25 Vintage-Inspired Projects for the Modern Girl & A Stylish History of the Sewing Revolution By Judi Ketteler
Sewing never goes out of style, and today it is more popular than ever! Sew Retro offers twenty-five stylish, vintage-inspired sewing projects -- beautiful bags, essential skirts, unique pillows, and more -- that are a pleasure to sew, thanks to easy instructions, helpful diagrams, and a pocket of ten full-size patterns.
This fun, inspirational book also uncovers sewing's colorful history, from the introduction of the sewing machine to the modern DIY movement, and features interviews with today's hottest fabric and pattern designers, including Amy Butler, Betz White, Barbara Brackman, Emma Brennan, Judie Rothermel, and Kathy Miller of Michael Miller Fabrics. Filled with gorgeous project photography and quirky vintage illustrations that bring the 1920s, 1940s, 1950s, and beyond to life, Sew Retro celebrates sewing yesterday and today.

ReplyDeleteThis book looks so great. I have been collecting retro fabrics for over 15 years! Last weekend for my wedding shower my friends threw a sewing party for me and we used all my retro fabric to sew table runners and napkins for the wedding. It was a blast and the wedding decor is going to look so great with all this retro fabric! Now I need to win this to restock my collection!

It is so REFRESHING to see an interesting, intriguing, and well conceived design project book finally being published :-D The focus os not only on technique(s), but quick, easy projects that are functional everyday essentials as well.
ReplyDeleteI have used many of the sewing machines featured on the book's cover, and I must state that my absolute favorite is the PFAFF Hand-Crank sewing machine! One can use it ANYWHERE, any time of day, indoors or out, without any need for electricity :-D.
Fabulous, simply chic designs that are equally useful while teaching new skills ... every project is 'a teachable moment.'
Kudos & Bravo Judi!!!
Before I started to sew, I would oggle books with costumes from the past and wonder how they were dreamed up and then made. I'm still amazed at the complex dress sewn exclusively by hand prior to the proliferation of sewing machines. I think this new book will let us look at the past to remind us of where sewing has come from in order to inspire us to create what's to come in the future.
ReplyDeleteThis looks like so much fun! I love it when I come across something that inspires me to get back into sewing!

Love the dress on the cover! Made one similar over 20 years ago. Saved it as it was a lot of work - invisible zipper in side and tons of fabric - really full skirt. Need to pull it out to see if it still fits :-)
